North Carolina to Wisconsin – Day 3

15 June 2023 – Thursday

0908  55,600  72° – Left FMCA Headquarters Campground for a very short drive to see an old friend in Cincinnatti.  Had a lovely visit and headed out after lunch.
If you are an FMCA member with a reason to be near Cincinnatti, don’t miss the opportunity to camp in town for as little as $10/night.

1208  55,606  69°  Left Cincinnatti and headed northwest.

1600  55,862  86°  Rantoul, Illinois
Stopped for the night at Prairie Pines Campground.

We’re in site 40 for $30.  Part of a former Air Force Base, full hook-up campsites here are on the cement pads of former buildings.

Just past the corn is Chanute Field, later renamed Chanute Air Force Base. The airfield was active from 1917 until 1993.

We did drive over to see the remains of the base.

The doors on one of the two big hangers open to a width of 250 feet.
We hope the field finds a new reason to exist. I grew up next to an Air Force Base and it was sad to see this one without a purpose.

Back at the campground we enjoyed the large individual bathrooms with showers.

Indoor laundry facilities are also available.

Good night from the cornfields of Rantoul, Illinois
