The last day, of three, where we visited harbors and lighthouses along the western shore of Lake Huron. Places to visit around Harrisville is today’s focus.

We would definitely stay here again. I’d even stop for lunch or dinner if we were just passing through. Check out yesterday’s post for more info on the Brew Haus.

Harrisville Harbor has lovely lake views and clean public restrooms. Parking is at the top of the hill overlooking the harbor and breakwater.

You might be able to spot our van above the marina facilities.

The man-made breakwater entrance is marked by a green triangle and a flashing light.

Diesel, gasoline, ice, and pump-outs are available at the fuel dock.

This courtesy van is available for visiting boaters to stock up on supplies.

Way back in the 1980’s, when we kept our catboat s/v Magic Paws on the Great Lakes, Harrisville Harbor was as far north as we sailed.

Sturgeon Point Lighthouse. While the grounds are open every day, the lighthouse is only open for tours Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

We met a volunteer who found the job through the Michigan DNR website. Volunteers are allowed to camp at the lighthouse all week in exchange for giving tours on the weekends. Left at 1050

Ships have plied these waters for hundreds of years. A little over a mile offshore lies a reef that sent many of them to the bottom of Lake Huron. Divers come to this area to explore shipwrecks in the clear, cold waters. This is one of many informational signs around Presque Isle County. Here’s a link to all of the signs in case you want to follow the trail: NOAA arcgis.com/maps

Driving out of town we noticed a rail truck crossing the road. We followed it and found the Harrisville Depot.

1102 73,791 63°F Harrisville Depot.
It’s not open to the public, but has been purchased by a local non-profit. Hopefully this 1901 depot will be restored next time we are in the area. Left at 1108

Cedarbrook Trout Farm is also near Harrisville. Springs have been feeding the ponds here for over 75 years.

They are a family owned hatchery where you can pay to fish for trout. They supply the equipment, clean your catch, and even package it up. What a great way to insure fresh trout for dinner.
If you enjoy fishing, check out the Great Lakes Fisheries Heritage Trail for trip ideas.

Jewel Lake Campground. $7.50 a night with a National Parks Senior Pass. Only four campers here. Beth made lunch at the picinic area. 2 bars AT&T LTE. We put this on a list of future places to stay. This would be a good camping spot, but we’re going to stay with relatives in the area west of here. Left at 1208
If you are interested in the Lake Huron further north, check out the by Map page to see other places we’ve enjoyed, or go directly to our Alpena page and click through our 2018 trip.
