Radio Picnic Fun on the Neuse

27 October 2021

Enjoyed visiting with boating and radio friends at the annual Waterway Radio & Cruising Club picnic near New Bern, North Carolina. Thanks to Jim Thompson for inviting us.

KOA Holiday New Bern was the picnic venue. They New Bern bear was joined by a ghost for Halloween.

Site #25, with a river view, was perfect for us. While most sites had full hookups for significantly more, this water & electric site was $39/night.

Beth, Chika, and Jim had a good visit on one of the substantial swings. Jim is one of the WRCC weather reporters.

The pier is a focal point for the campground. Everyone wandered down here at some point during their stay.

This arrow is a reminder of how high Hurricane Florence flooded the area in 2018. All of the campsites were underwater.

Sunset was a perfect time to gaze over the river.

Someone designed this swing with sunsets in mind.

Morning chill brought mist to the shoreline.

Despite a New Bern address, the campground is in Bridgeton on the opposite side of the Neuse river. Some of the old homes and church steeples can be seen behind the railroad bridge that connects the towns.

One couple did arrive by boat, stopping on their southward migration. Their Caliber 47 is a capable and pretty cruising sailboat.

Tom set-up a station outside his tent, successfully connecting to the morning radio net.

The picnic was a good excuse to see old friends. Wayne, Beth, Jim, Janet, and I reminiscing about the last time we were all together – 21 years ago sailing in the British Virgin Islands!

Beth really enjoyed the swing here. KOA’s aren’t normally our kind of camping, but this park was spotless and the staff was great. We would return, especially to a site with a water view.

Our neighbors, Steve & Debbie, had recently purchased a new Leisure Travel Unity coach. We shared a few favorite campgrounds and wished them fun adventures. Both our Pleasure-Way and their Leisure Travel are built by Canadian companies that make quality products.

About fifty radio cruisers turned out for the picnic and annual meeting. If you are a boater traversing the Intra-coastal waterway or cruising the Bahamas, look up WaterwayRadio on the web. The group provides safety and support via daily position reports and weather information on 7.268 Mhz LSB. If you don’t have a boat, there is a Land Cruiser’s (RV) net on Wednesday mornings, after the Waterway net.
