Closing the Grand Circle – Home in NC

09 Sept 2019

Time: 1100

Temperature: 76° F

Odometer: 26,460 miles
Location: Home

Yesterday morning, we lingered in the parking lot waiting for Tamarack to open. There we picked up the vase Beth made in the glass blowing studio. It spent the night in a cooling oven while we slept comfortably in the parking lot. From Beckley, West Virginia we headed five hours due south to Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Arriving in NC a day before our house sitters moved out, we spent the last night of the journey camped in the driveway at our good friend Jim Thompson’s home. It was great to visit in person and share a meal with Jim and Chika the wonder dog.

Early this morning, Jim let me join him in his radio shack. Jim is part of a volunteer group that provides weather reports to cruising sailboats via Ham radio.

After a leisurely breakfast we departed and drove the few miles home to Northern Durham.

Four months and six days after leaving home we were back in our own driveway.

Trip Stats

May 3 – September 9, 2019

15,417 miles

We went through two countries, four provinces, twenty-two states, and one windshield. We reconnected with childhood friends, high school friends, and camping friends, plus made new friends along the way. The scenery was spectacular, but the people made it special. Our Pleasure-Way Lexor TS provided a fun and mostly trouble-free way to explore the arteries of our continent.

May: NC, SC, GA, FL, MS, LA, AR, TX, NM, CO
June: CO, MT, WY, Alberta
July: Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, ID, WA, MT

Sorting through over seven thousand photos and writing the one hundred and four blog posts took longer than the actual trip. Posts weren’t completed until February 2021. Here’s a link to the first post if you want to follow through the whole adventure:
