Cape May with Pleasure-Way

Cape May was the destination for this trip. A ten minute drive from the ferry dock had us checking in at Holly Shores Camping Resort.  Here we joined a group of Pleasure-Way owners for a relaxing long weekend of socializing and exchanging ideas.

We did get out a little bit, finding the start of a bicycle trail across the road from the campground entrance. It turned out to be a converted railroad line leading to Historic Cold Spring Village. Unfortunately the village was closed to the public since it was booked for school tours. I did shoot some photos of the railroad structures as they would be great to model for our backyard railroad.

Another outing was to Cape May Point State Park to see the lighthouse, ocean, and birds. We learned that this is a big stop for bird and butterfly migrations. While there were very few birds during our visit, at the end of September, hundreds of hawks come through on their journey south. A ranger told us that monarch butterflies also rest here before crossing the bay.

Shallow freshwater ponds and plants, like this thistle, are abundant.

A thistle in bloom will turn into good bird food later this year.

It is hard for me to resist taking photos of lighthouses.

An abandoned bunker sits on the beach, another remnant of World War II defenses.

Back at the campground we made our own shade and relaxed. Come sunset, we retreated inside, as insects were in abundance. We could have used some birds to help reduce the population!

Pleasure-Way owners know how to eat and tell stories. We gathered for a group photo and took a hayride around the campground. A younger group followed us and had considerably more fun using water canons to spray their friends from the wagon.

Exchanging stories around the campfire is always a fun way to wrap-up a rally.
