Beaufort, SC is pronounced a little differently from
Beaufort, NC (bewfort vs bowfort) but they are both great places for cruising
sailors to stop. We’re at the city marina waiting for the winds to die down a
bit before moving on. Strong currents and winds in the upper twenties helped us
choose the marina rather than anchoring out. The town is only a few steps away
and boasts many homes dating from the 1700’s. We walked around Thursday
afternoon enjoying the sights and shops. It is exactly how I picture a small
Southern town on the water. Live oak trees with moss hanging from the branches.
We ran across a small conservative temple, the first we’ve seen within walking
distance of the water.

Noah is having a little meltdown after leaving friends
in Charleston. This seems to happen a couple of days after leaving other kids.
He’s fine the day we leave, but falls apart a couple of days later. Not much
fun for anyone and we’re not quite sure how to handle it. Doesn’t want to do
school work, so none of us have any time to explore. We’ve spent three hours
doing math that should take 45 minutes and shed way too many tears in the
process.

The new radio works well. Checked in on the Waterway
Ham net and Cruiseheimer’s Marine SSB net this morning with good signal reports
from both, which is a first for us.

Navigation note: Between the Ashepoo Cutoff and
Beaufort, G “177” is actually out of the water at low tide. We didn’t run
aground, but cruiser’s should give this mark a wide berth.
