Ships Passing

Today we did something different – went sailing. Just
us and the wind and, as it turned out, a few friends. The day didn’t start so
good, as we ran aground trying to get into a fuel dock in Selby Bay. Luckily it
was just mud, so we motored off and decided to wait until St Michaels to get
fuel. As we headed out into the bay we passed a Nonsuch 26, just like our old
boat. Spoke with the captain and it turns out it is hull #10, only three from
our old hull #13. Radio communication is much like a party line. It turns out
that Raf & Linda on Quisqueya from New Bern heard us calling the fuel dock.
They hailed us and we ended up passing near Bloody Point (isn’t that a great
name). We were able to sail most of the way to St Michaels and it really felt
nice to turn off the engine and just listen to the wind and waves. With the
emphasis on motors over the last month we haven’t done much sailing. Shortly
before reaching today’s destination the rain caught up with us and we refueled
and pumped out in the drizzle at St Michaels Marina. With dockage at $3.25 per
foot plus electric, we opted to anchor out. The harbor is quite small and
popular, so we ended up anchoring out in the river with a couple of other
boats. By the time night fell, there were ten boats anchored around us. One
next door is Halimeda from the Maryland School of Sailing. It turns out that
the Captain/Instructor is Jochen Hoffman. Jochen and I took a sailing class together where we
rounded the Delmarva Peninsula as students six years ago. It was fun to catch up with
him.  I’m hearing some thunder outside, so I guess it is time to shut down
the computer for tonight.
