Defender’s Day

Today is a holiday in Maryland that celebrates the
successful defense of Baltimore by Ft McHenry. We joined in the celebration by
taking the water taxi over to Ft McHenry where a re-enactment was underway. At
the visitor’s center, an author read her book to Noah and a couple other kids
that described the battle and writing of the star spangled banner from a kids
viewpoint. Then we proceeded to the fort where we learned about life in the
Navy, Marines and Army back in 1816. Noah asked lots of good questions and
witnessed canon fire, fife and drum corps waking up the troops, cooking and
even the entertainment of a magician of the era.

After surviving the battle we rode over to the
Baltimore Public Works museum which gave us an inside view of how a big city is
planned and maintained. The water taxi fee gets you an all day pass, so we used
it to go out to dinner at Fells Point and then to get us back to Canton to make
another grocery run. Noah even met a new friend on the Taxi to exchange email
with.  After we stowed our provisions, we relaxed on deck and enjoyed a
concert by the Army Field Band and Soldier’s Chorus followed by a great view of
a fireworks display over Ft McHenry. If you are ever around Baltimore in early
September, stop in for the Defender’s Day celebration.
