You never know what to expect when pulling into a
port. Upon arrival in Elizabeth City this afternoon, there was a parrot in a
tree. Turns out to be a local pet that rides to the waterfront on his owner’s
bicycle handlebars. Noah learned some parrot tricks and swung the bird around
on a cane.

The day started early with as we headed into the
Dismal Swamp Canal. Took a break for lunch with cruising friends at the NC
Welcome Center. Beth made an apple flan and we all shared it in the picnic
area. It looks like the welcome center is going to become more of a nature
center and kayaking launch site, both good things. Leaving the two other boats
behind, we pushed on to catch the 1330 lock opening in South Mills and make the
remaining twenty miles to Elizabeth City before dark. There was quite a bit of
debris and floating logs in the Pasquatank, possibly remnants of Ernesto. We
heard one clunk as we exited the canal, but everything seems to be working
okay.

In Elizabeth City, we were greeted by Fred, the
original rose buddy, who took Beth for a ride in his golf cart to pick a fresh
rose. It really is one of the friendliest towns we’ve visited. Met a couple of
other cruisers, and heard that the local library was having a book sale. Noah
and Beth walked into town and came back with a grocery bag full of books for
only $2. Looks like we’ll be reading more Happy Hollister adventures this Fall.
Went out to dinner at the Cypress Creek Grill — well worth a visit if you are
in town.

The plan is to get up and go first thing tomorrow
since the winds are going to pick-up later in the day. Hope to cross the
Albemarle Sound and get down into the Alligator River.
