Beth had been camping near her family on the other side of the state while I stayed with mom. Beth pulled in here feeling ill, so I just threw my stuff in the van and we headed north to keep mom from getting exposed to whatever Beth had contracted.  (Beth recovered in a week or so).

Cary State Forest Campground
This is the campground we had scouted out on our way south last month.

Pulled into site #1 after passing an impressive Christmas light display at a house just before the park entrance. It was after dark so we pulled straight in and parked on the large, level, concrete pad at the back of the site. Didn’t bother to back-in or plug-in, we were just too tired.

Site cost was $30.80 ($22.52 + 6.70 reservation fee + 1.58 taxes). The verizon cell signal was strong at 4 bars.

The next morning we walked around the campground to find six nicely spaced sites screened from the highway by trees. We could hear road noise and nearby trains on tracks that parallel the highway, but neither was overly loud.

A group site (#7) has room for at least three campers and is nestled around the base of a fire observation tower. The tower wasn’t open for climbing.

We walked a portion of the 2 mile long, easy, campground loop trail. It winds through wetlands on a boardwalk before emerging in a pine forest.  There are also equestrian trails available, but we didn’t have room for a horse in the camper van.

We drove the remaining distance to Durham in one leg. This neighborhood red-shouldered hawk welcomed us home and perched outside our bedroom window long enough for us to snap a few photos.
