Cooling our Heels in the Adirondacks

With temperatures forecasted to be around 100 degrees
for most of the week, we decided it was better to get out of Rock Hall as
quickly as possible to await the engine installation somewhere much cooler.
Where to go was a pretty easy decision, as Mark’s parents have a wonderful camp
(cottage) on Fern Lake in the Adirondack Mountains in northern New York. The
question was, “How to get there?” We thought about getting our car from NC, but
the logistics of getting us to it and then getting it back to NC when we were
done with it were more than our boiled little minds could handle. We thought
about just flying from Baltimore, or taking the train, but the problem there is
that Rock Hall is on the other side of the Chesapeake Bay from Baltimore and
there isn’t a good way to get there, other than by car. We could rent a car,
but I really hated paying for one when we wouldn’t need it once we got to the
Haskells’ camp. What to do? Lisa Volland to the Rescue! Lisa offered to drive
six hours from Albany down to Rock Hall to get us and then drive us up to
Albany the next day. It was an offer we couldn’t refuse, so on Tuesday Lisa
drove down and we took off on Wednesday morning. As we drove, the temps reached
a high of 104 according to the car thermometer. When we got to Albany, Lisa
passed us off to Brenda, Mark’s sister, and she drove us from Albany to Saratoga,
NY, where Mark’s mom was waiting to drive us up to camp. We arrived at camp at
dusk to warm temps, but nothing like the furnace it was down in Maryland. That
night a front moved through, bringing rain, and much more comfortable weather.
The rain stopped around noon, allowing us to drive into Plattsburgh for
shopping and allowing Mark to explore how the town has changed since he moved
away. After dinner Mark was took a kayak ride before taking the beautiful photo
of the view from the cottage dock above.  The largest mountain in the
picture is Whiteface, home of many Olympic Skiing events. We will cool our
heels here until the boat is about done and then we will head back to Rock Hall
and resume cruising.
