We’ve had two good days running the 125 miles from
Elizabeth City back to our old home port of Oriental. We anchored last night in
a serene part of the Upper Pungo River last night and enjoyed a peaceful sunset
and (almost) full moon. I even ran the movie camera for a bit to capture the
sounds of birds and fish jumping. Today it was unseasonably warm and Noah got some feet dunking in. Caught a small spanish mackerel and let him go. Beth
counted over fifty fish “boils” as we were passing through the almost glasslike
calm waters in the Pamlico Sound. There was a big shrimp trawler being towed in
by a smaller trawler today and we felt a little better knowing that even the
professionals get towed in sometimes. No room at the town dock here, so we’re
anchored inside the breakwall. We rowed the dinghy to shore and enjoyed the
flavors of town stopping at The Bean for ice cream (it was 90 in the cockpit)
and found a used paddle for our new inflatable kayak. Went back to the boat for
showers so we could go to M&M’s for dinner and not offend the other customers.
Heading over to Matthew’s Point for the long weekend to meet with the crews of
Luna Sea and Skat. The warm weather is supposed to break tomorrow as a low
pressure system moves in. We hope to be hanging out at the dock before the
winds pick-up. We’ll be in NC for the next few weeks and in the Neuse
through next weekend so hope to see some of our local friends.
