Green Turtle to Great Sale

Morning broke with the best skies we’ve seen in a week.

Four of the local nurse sharks swam under Temptation as we readied the lines for departure. Earl was happy that he hadn’t met any sharks while cleaning the boat bottom earlier in the week.

We left Bluff House Marina astern at 0805. Water temp was 76, air temp 85, and we enjoyed a southeasterly breeze.

Temptation’s bow points south to the channel out of White Sound. This view is much different during the day than at night, just ask Jim, Craig, Dovie or myself 😉

Captain of the Bolo IV GTC Ferry waved a greeting as he passed us in the channel.

0816 we cleared the bar exiting White Sound into the Sea of Abaco.

Passed a ketch pulling a trimaran. Thought they were doing a great job of moving in tandem until we spotted the tow line.

Redundant instruments are running in the cockpit and down below. Earl’s latest addition is an iPad running Garmin charts. Coastal Explorer is running on the PC and their are well tested waypoints in the vintage Garmin handheld.

A wee bit of humidity exists in the air here as demonstrated by the dew point on a water bottle.

“Center of the World Rock” is marked on Bahamian charts. It isn’t close to the center of anyone’s world, though it could be if one found it inadvertently.

One of six boats we encountered in our ten hour sail to the northern Abacos.

Not everyone has an easy voyage. This large yacht was washed up on shore on the wrong side of a reef.

Captain Quick manned the helm under the bimini.

Upon anchoring at Great Sale, we opened all the hatches to capture whatever breeze was available. The wind generator behind the cockpit helped top off the batteries keeping our anchor light shining all night long.

Nothing in sight behind us made it easy to sleep without fear of dragging into anything hard.

Only three other boats were anchored in the bight at Great Sale. Although the island is uninhabited, the protected anchorage is a common stopover for boats moving between the Abacos and Eastern Florida.

Laughing Gulls were the only life visible between us and the sunset.
