Into Ontario

20 July 2023  –  Thursday

We head east from Michigan into Ontario on the way to Maine.
0845  57,470  61°  Brimley State Park, MI
Woke to rain and cloudy skies. Stopped at the boat ramp and could just make out two lakers crossing in the distance.
Dumped waste tanks before leaving the campground. They supply rinse hoses.

0925  57,487  63°  Sault Ste. Marie, MI

Crossed into Canada without any delays.
1937  57,489  64°  Sault Ste. Marie, ON
Drove along the waterfront and stopped at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre. Admission was 18.50 per person, so we decided to leave it for another visit when we have more time.

1028  57,523  64°  Port Findlay, ON
Bridge to St. Joseph Island
St. Joseph is the western end of Lake Huron’s North Channel. We explored the Manitoulin Islands on other trips and love the area.

Not having been to St. Joseph Island, we couldn’t resist crossing the bridge and driving the loop road.

Pretty yellow flowers were scattered among the rocky shoreline.

1045  57,529  63°  Richard’s Landing

The town has a well-protected marina and cute little lighthouse.

1120  57,541  Hilton Beach, ON

A marina and campground reached into the north channel on a spit of land.

From here we headed back to the bridge and crossed onto the mainland.

1209  57,575      Thessalon, ON

Seeing Lighthouse Point on the map, we tried to drive out, but found it is a private home and development.

1217  57,578  64° Thessalon, ON
Peace Park

We did find a park in town where we stopped and made lunch.

The Peace Park was an appropriate place as we were connecting to a memorial service for my Uncle Ernie in Maine. The eldest of five Haskell brothers, he was well loved and will be remembered dearly.

1425  57,614  64°  Blind River, ON

Checked out the gardens with a view of a marina across the water.

We were pleasantly surprised to find camping at the marina is available for only $28.25.
We had reservations another hour east, so didn’t stay, but noted it for future trips.

1550  57,672  67°  Webbwood, ON

Clayton Farm
Harvest Host with parking on gravel near the highway.
We bought fresh eggs and jam.
No eggs were allowed crossing the border, so we wanted to restock.
Clouds broke up and we glimpsed a little blue sky before sunset.
Not a scenic spot, but quieter than we expected this close to the highway.
