Jaxport

Although we pass through Jacksonville several times a
year on I-95, this is the first time we’ve stopped in the downtown. The marina
isn’t anything special, but has a great location for seeing the local sights.
Jaxport is the local name for the Port of Jacksonville. The main reason for
visiting was to see MOSH, the Museum of Science & History. Noah enjoyed the
cetacian exhibit (dolphins and whales), the Grossology exhibit , a planetarium
show and the “shocking” demonstration of Vandegraf and Tessla generators. A
free maritime museum is adjacent to the marina as is a large fountain that
changes colors in the evening. We walked across the blue bridge (today’s photo)
to visit Jacksonville Landing, a complex of shops and restaurants. Beth made it
across the bridge, despite not really liking heights. We took a small monorail
type train back and stayed on to get an elevated tour of downtown — a true
bargain at 35 cents a ride. The marina is attached to the River City Brewing
Company restaurant and the bathrooms are behind a small stage. A duo was
singing Simon & Garfunkle, Billy Joel and Jimmy Buffet songs, so the three
of us relaxed for an hour or so listening to some fun, live music.
