Off to the Bahamas

At 0500 Earl & Karen pulled into the driveway so we could begin the retrieval of “Temptation.” After spending the winter in the Abacos, they got tired of waiting for a good weather window, flew home a month ago, and left their Endeavor 42 in the Bahamas. I’m privileged to fly over and help Earl sail the boat home. Karen is going to drop us at the airport and avoid bouncing across the gulf stream.

Rain and clouds greeted us in Miami. The fleet of American Airlines jets filled this side of the concourse. A convenient skytrain moved us to find our smaller plane.

Reproductions of fish arranged in geometrical shapes brightened the inside of the terminal. I should have found something to include for perspective as these were life-sized fish!

Twenty-nine minutes after leaving Miami we were walking down the steps onto the tarmac in Marsh Harbour. There is now jet service to the island. Last time we flew into Marsh Harbour, it was in a twin engine prop where they asked how much each passenger weighed to get the plane balanced.

From the airport, we took a taxi to the ferry dock at Treasure Cay. Our original plan was to provision at the “big” grocery store in Marsh Harbour, but our driver told us it was a holiday and most of the groceries wouldn’t be restocked until tomorrow.

We ate lunch at the shack by the ferry landing before hopping on the Bolo II for the final leg of the trip over to Green Turtle Cay. The ferry captain was playing pool in the bar while we ate, so we knew he wouldn’t leave without us.

We passed one of the other ferries zipping across the Sea of Abaco. These wooden vessels carry passengers and luggage to Green Turtle Cay at least six times a day.

Approaching New Plymouth, it was great to see things hadn’t really changed in the three years since my last visit.

Chanukah decorations are still on the town dock. There is no urgent need to take them down before summer starts.

Bolo II dropped us at the Green Turtle Club dock where sv Temptation looked clean and ready to go sailing. Spent the afternoon checking all the systems and they appear nominal!
