Today we explored the opposite shore and found the
Portsmouth Shipyard Museum and Portsmouth lightship. This side is more
conducive to visiting boaters as it has free docks to tie up at during the day.
Norfolk charged $3.25 to land your dinghy. They have a nice children’s museum
with an extensive toy train collection along with a very nice section of
beautifully maintained homes from the 1700’s. The only thing we couldn’t find
was ice cream. Visiting the Elizabeth River Project, a volunteer
conservation group, Noah was given a stuffed dolphin and we learned about
efforts to clean up the river. Also received a phone call when walking around
“Olde Towne.” Can you believe we won a cruise on a pirate ship in Virginia
Beach? Put our name in a jar yesterday at Nauticus. It does pay to fill
out those entry forms!

We replaced and rebedded some screws holding the
lazarette cover on this evening and ordered a new engine compartment fan. Plans
are to go to Hampton tomorrow for laundry and to empty the holding tank, then Yorktown
on Thursday or Friday where we should meet up with the spare parts we’ve
ordered so far. Still no luck getting email working via Ham radio, so position
reports will only come in when we have a wi-fi connection.

This is another beautiful night at anchor here in the
Elizabeth River. The moon is almost full and we’ve been watching tug boats zoom
in and out of the port escorting huge freighters to the shipyard. There is even a restored schooner that takes tourists out on the river.
