ProMaster Battery Replacement

Original Battery

2023-5-3

Last week our 2018 Lexor 🚐 (2018 RAM ProMaster 3500) wasn’t switching from defrost to vent or heat. Also, it was difficult to start and the check engine light came on.

Running our ODB scanner showed a low battery voltage code. The battery was original (2/09/2017), so we ordered a new Interstate AGM Group H9 (95R) from Costco and replaced it today.

New Battery

We sized it up from 800 to 950 Ah just for a little more peace of mind.

It is heavy and a bit of a pain to install, but really only took about an hour.

Lo and behold, the ventilation controls now work as they should!

Searching YouTube we found this video from Dave at One AdVANture At A Time.  It gave us almost all the info we needed to get replace our battery.  1) We found that the battery compartment cover had changed from 2016 to 2018. Ours didn’t have the screw under the center console.

2) Since we elected to add a larger battery, we had to remove this plastic spacer in the bottom of the battery compartment.

Squeezing the ends of the spacer released the hooks. and it popped right out.

Because Dave’s video is so helpful, we didn’t document our installation with photos this time.

Tools needed:

    13MM Socket

    10 MM Wrench

    Quarter (Coin)

Phillips screwdriver

Here are a couple of reference photos because the 2018 is different from the 2016 shown in the video.

Underside of the battery compartment cover shows the closure screws. They rotate 270° to open or close.
