Sealing The Bugs Out

Our 2018 Pleasure-Way Lexor TS has all the available options to keep insects from getting inside the van. Rolef screens cover the big sliding door opening and cover the space revealed when the back doors are open. The Fantastic Fan has a screen and all three of the CR Lawrence awning windows have screens. Despite all that, some determined insects were finding their way inside.

The awning windows were where we found gaps.  The corner of each window has a square hole. Hard to see in squares of black metal, the hole allowed a piece of lawn trimmer string to pass through the window casing.  If the string could get out, then insects could get in. Check yours and see if it is the same. A little dab of silicone sealed the hole.

The vertical edges on the pop out screens didn’t seal tightly against the frames. While we had the silicone uncorked, we remedied this as well.

From the outside, Beth ran a bead of caulk along the vertical edge of the screen frame where it didn’t quite fit against the window frame. This is the passenger side window on our Lexor.

She did the same to the two screens on the driver side.

That thin bead of silicone can be cut off easily if we ever need to remove the screen.

This was an easy upgrade that reduced the number of insects our bug zapper zaps each evening.

An alternative to silicone is black gaffer’s tape. This tape is used by theaters and music venues to safely secure all sorts of items, yet remains removable. Thank you to Sharon Rodriguez on the FaceBook Pleasure-Way RV Group for sharing this suggestion.
