Flagler College Lobby |
After a good nights sleep at the City Marina, we set
out to explore this old Spanish City. We toured the Ponce DeLeon Hotel, now
Flagler College. How would you like go to a private college where you dine
under tiffany windows, sleep where millionaires once vacationed and check the
time against a clock made by Thomas Edison? The tour was very worthwhile and
even Noah enjoyed it. From there we visited the Old Spanish Quarter where some
residences have been restored from the 1500’s and people are in character
depicting life on this Spanish outpost. Noah fed chickens and picked wax myrtle
berries to make candles. St Augustine has lots of touristy shops, but there are
fascinating bits of the past preserved around them. The cathedrals and old fort
add to the atmosphere as the sound of bells and occasional canon fire help the
imagination drift back in time.
