Summer Wrap-up

07-08 September 2022

Posted 09 May 2023
The final leg of our 2022 summer travels

We’ve been driveway camping at my sister’s near Saratoga Lake. Mom’s ankle surgery went well and she is going to recuperate here for a while.
We will head home for a couple of weeks and return later to give my sister a break.

In preparation for leaving, we looked for a nearby place to empty our holding tanks. The Albany-Saratoga Speedway has camping on race nights and allowed us to use their dump station at no charge on a weekday afternoon. This may change as the owner is considering the cost of required improvements to the sewer system.

Right around the corner, we learned that one of our favorite snack foods was invented here.  The restaurant no longer exists, but a historical marker informs those that take the time to read it that George “Crum” Speck invented the Potato Chip here.

07 September – Thursday

0850  49,954  62°  Leave Malta, NY
1216  50,112  64°  Endicott, NY Visitor’s Center  1256
We pulled in here and made lunch in the van before heading inside. A carousel horse on the visitor’s center door pays tribute to the three carousels in Endicott. George Johnson, founder of the Endicott Johnson Shoe Company, donated the carousels in town and three more around the county. Riding the Broome County Carousel Circuit is a thing you can do here and they are all free.

1424  50,202  68°  PA Welcome Center

Crossing the border from New York into Pennsylvania, we stopped at the Welcome Center. The timber frame building had clean restrooms and information about local flora, fauna, and attractions.

Outside, we could see the Tioga Lake Dam and surrounding hills. In researching afterwards, it seems we should have made our way into town for an even better view.

1605  50,271  Weaver’s Ice Cream

Beth found a cute place to fuel up the van and enjoy a little ice cream in Allenwood, Pennsylvania.

Weaver’s has an old fashioned diner and an ice cream truck. Patrons didn’t let a little rain keep them from running inside for a treat.

1715  50,332  Dauphin, PA

Riverside Meadows is our rest spot tonight on the Susquehanna River

A Harvest Host event venue, the owners live in this beautiful stone home and are restoring the property as an event venue. An Inn and stables for canal traffic once stood here. When it isn’t raining, guests are welcome to sit and enjoy the fire pit.

We parked next to the old canal path between the house and the Susquehanna.

Trees have grown up where water once floated canal boats.

Canal traffic was displaced by the Pennsylvania Railroad which parallels the canal and the river. Although the tracks are very close, we didn’t hear trains overnight.

08 September – Thursday

0900  50,332  68  Leaving Riverside Meadows with clearing skies

1205  50,498  73°  Warrenton, VA

Rady Park Arboretum was our lunch stop. The pleasant community park has a playground, walking paths, and over 90 different kinds of trees and woody plants.

1510  50,638  75°  Rest Area on I-85

1722  50,759  75°  Durham, NC

Parked at home!
