We stayed in St Michaels long enough to go visit the
library this morning. It was worth sticking around for as they had lots of children’s
books for ten cents each. Can’t do better than that for restocking Noah’s
library. Now we need to find room to store two grocery bags full of
books! We obviously enjoyed St Michaels. Although it is crowded and expensive,
you can stay there economically by anchoring out and using the town dinghy
dock. A library, post office and grocery store are all a very short walk and
museum members can even use the museum docks for free during the day if there
is room.

Staying later meant taking a short cut around the
skinny side of Kent Island to reach Rock Hall before dark. You can see on the
chart above that the channel is only 3 feet at mean low water — and we need
close to five. There is also a 2 knot current that runs through the opening
that pushes you towards the drawbridge which only opens every half hour. In
reality, we never saw depths under six feet and the channel was very well
marked. The new engine held us comfortably in reverse while we waited for
the bridge opening. This is the first bridge tender that responded with 10-4
and actually joked with the boats on the radio about running over the pesky
small boats that were ignoring right-of-way rules. It is not a spot I’d want to
try and traverse on a busy weekend with lots of boat traffic. We made it back
to Rock Hall with 47 hours on the engine and changed the oil. A few more days
of mechanical preventative maintenance should have us good to go for a little
while longer.
