Heading north on 15 under cloudy skies.
It was a very relaxing drive through VA and MD as opposed to 95 and the Washington Beltway.
Beth shot this photo as we were rolling through the pretty town of Leesburg.
Drove by and noticed an interesting set of buildings, so turned around and returned to find Dills Tavern, built in 1794. The building has survived and evolved into multiple uses over more than two hundred years. These include a tavern, hotel, distillery, mercantile, and a single family residence.
The working wheelwright shop was built in the 1800’s was moved here from Carroll Township in 2011. Wheelwrights had to understand blacksmithing and carpentry.
We opened the door and were greeted by a delightful fire. A voice from the shop invited us to come back and visit.
A friendly and skilled woodworker showed us how he was turning a table leg. The lathe is human powered by a foot pedal.
We love finding interesting little spots like this. Dills Tavern and the surrounding buildings were a pleasant break. Here’s a link for more information: North York County Historical and Preservation Society
It was moved here from the nearby Burkholder Farm in 2012. Only a few of this German design, known as a Ground Barn, survive in North America.

Boondocker’s Welcome
Brian’s Backyard is a quiet field across the street from a few houses. One bar of Verizon LTE. We appreciate the hosts that open their property to travelers.
Skies were interesting as the sun set. Being close to halloween, there was a ghost visiting a nearby home.

We are here for a few weeks to help mom recover from her ankle surgery and looking forward to seeing some of the fall colors.
