Added this new bird feeder before last weekend’s ice storm. A pair of Downy Woodpeckers really seemed to enjoy it.

Squirrels are uninterested in seed cakes infused with hot pepper. The Mini Cylinder Feeder was a “free” bonus with our Wild Birds Unlimited savings club.

Here are a few more photos of our locals trying it out.

Winter Storm “Fern” brought lots of clients to our backyard feeders. Fortunately, we received less than an inch of sleet and freezing rain and didn’t lose power.

There was enough activity that birds had to wait their turn in nearby trees.

This Eastern Towhee had no problem finding food on top of the ice.

Filled the feeders again as snow is in the forecast for this weekend. White stuff is fairly rare here in central North Carolina, so we’re looking forward to seeing what backyard visitors a storm might bring.

02 February Update: A few photos from our 4 inches of light, powdery snow.

Backyard visitors aren’t limited to birds. We have two regular groups of deer that browse in the backyard most mornings. This buck is the largest in the herd.

At first we thought this was an early goldfinch, but it is an immature Yellow-rumped Warbler, a new-to-us capture.

25 February update:

In a similar vein, a pair of Pine Warblers has arrived.

We’ll end with this cute Brown-headed Nuthatch.
